Writing sentences, additional grammar, mechanics, friendly letter, paragraphs, writing process for narrative/descriptive/expository writing, using effective writing techniques,  multiparagraph compositions, informational report, using figurative language, and other topics

In Fifth Grade, your child will learn:  detailed sentence structure, additional grammar, additional capitalization/punctuation rules, proper use of a friendly letter, using the writing process to compose narrative, descriptive, and expository writing (including formal paragraphs), effective writing skills , multi-paragraph composition, the process to complete a research project, other forms of written communication, and other topics.

 Fifth Grade Curriculum

Included:  DVDs with lesson-by-lesson video instruction and printable worksheets/assignment sheets/answer key in PDF format.  PDF files (not DVDs) are sent by email.

  • Review sentences types and sentence structure (compound sentences) and address sentence errors (fragment and run on)
  • Capitalization rules: beginning of sentences, names, city/state, holidays/countries
  • Punctuation rules:  period, question mark, & exclamation point, and comma usage
  • Grammar:  subject/predicate (both complete and simple, and compound subjects/predicates), nouns, proper nouns, action verbs, adjectives, pronouns, linking verbs, possessive nouns, subject/verb agreement, adverbs, propositional phrases
  • Spelling rules for plural nouns
  • Alphabetization
  • Parts of a personal letter & Writing a personal letter
  • Parts of a paragraph & Writing a paragraph

  • How to choose an appropriate writing form.

  • Revision:  word choice (use of a thesaurus), using strong details, a variety of sentence structure in writing, & figurative language when appropriate
